At MB&F, 2025 marks a significant milestone: their 20th birthday! To commemorate this special occasion, MB&F is introducing two Limited Editions of 20 pieces each: the LM Perpetual Longhorn and the LM Sequential Flyback Longhorn. These timepieces stand out with their unique combination of stainless-steel cases, rhodium-plated base plates, glossy black lacquer dials, blued hands, and notably longer lugs (horns), which give them their distinctive name.
The Birth of the Longhorn Concept
The Longhorn idea originated back in 2009 during the design phase of LM1, MB&F’s first Legacy Machine. The concept of elongated lugs—or horns—was visually appealing but presented challenges concerning the positioning of the spring bars, either close to the case or at the tip of the lugs. This could lead to an improper fit depending on wrist size. Consequently, the longhorns were replaced with shorter ones, and the concept was shelved, or so it seemed. In 2021, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the LM1, the Longhorn concept was revisited for a special prototype. This unique piece featured two holes in the lugs, one at the tip and another closer to the case, allowing customization for the wearer. It also showcased stainless steel and glossy black dials against a rhodium-plated base plate, diverging from the traditional white sub-dials of the Legacy Machines. The prototype was sold at auction for charity, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback. This reception rekindled interest in the Longhorn design, leading to its revival in the 2025 anniversary editions.
The LM Perpetual Longhorn
The LM Perpetual Longhorn is the first of these limited editions, integrating MB&F’s GPHG award-winning perpetual calendar initially launched in 2015. Developed in collaboration with independent watchmaker Stephen McDonnell, the 581-component movement is designed to address common issues associated with conventional perpetual calendars. McDonnell’s innovative “mechanical processor” prevents skipping dates and jamming gears by automatically deactivating the adjuster pushers during calendar changes.
In this special edition of 20 pieces, the movement is presented with a fresh aesthetic, featuring long horns and a striking black, silver, and blue color scheme, enhancing its visual appeal and user-friendliness.
The LM Sequential Flyback Longhorn
The second limited edition, the LM Sequential Flyback Longhorn, evolves from the LM Sequential, which earned the prestigious GPHG Aiguille d’Or award in 2022. Also created by Stephen McDonnell, the LM Sequential EVO marked MB&F’s first chronograph and their 20thcaliber. The EVO introduced the “Twinverter” binary switch, enabling various timing modes such as independent timing, split-second, cumulative, and lap-timer functions.
The Flyback version expands on these features by incorporating a flyback function. This edition, adorned with long horns, blued hands, and glossy black sub-dials, embodies both technical sophistication and aesthetic refinement, setting the stage for MB&F’s 20th-anniversary celebrations.
